عن National Gallery

The National Gallery holds around 2,300 paintings spanning the mid-13th century to 1900, displayed free of charge across 66 rooms facing Trafalgar Square. The collection began in 1824 when Parliament purchased 38 paintings from the estate of banker John Julius Angerstein for £57,000; unlike the Louvre or the Prado, it grew through purchase and bequest rather than royal patronage, which shapes its character as a broadly representative survey rather than a single dynasty's taste. The building itself, designed by William Wilkins and opened in 1838, sits on the former site of the King's Mews, and its Corinthian-columned portico has been criticised since construction for a dome considered structurally undersized relative to the facade's width. The Sainsbury Wing, added in 1991 to a postmodern design by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, now houses the early Renaissance galleries and hosts the paid special exhibitions, physically and administratively distinct from the free permanent collection next door.

أفضل وقت في اليوم: 10:00. At opening, or after 17:00 on a Friday, when the extended evening hours draw far fewer visitors than the midday period and the main galleries around the Sainsbury Wing entrance are noticeably quieter.

تاريخ National Gallery

The National Gallery was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1824 following the purchase of 38 paintings, including works by Raphael and Rubens, from the estate of Russian-born insurance financier John Julius Angerstein. The new institution initially displayed the works in Angerstein's former townhouse before the purpose-built Wilkins building on Trafalgar Square opened in 1838, chosen for its central location, accessible to all social classes rather than the aristocratic west end favoured by private collections.

The collection expanded through the 19th century via major bequests, notably the 1876 Wynn Ellis bequest and the 1910 Salting bequest, and through active acquisition policy under directors such as Charles Eastlake, the Gallery's first director from 1855, who travelled Europe purchasing early Italian works considered unfashionable at the time and now core to the collection's strength in that period.

During the Second World War the entire collection was evacuated to a disused slate quarry in Manod, north Wales; pianist Myra Hess held lunchtime concerts in the emptied Gallery rooms throughout the war to sustain public morale, an episode the Gallery still marks. The Sainsbury Wing extension, funded by the Sainsbury family and completed in 1991, resolved decades of debate over how to display the Gallery's earliest works, from around 1250 to 1500, in a purpose-built sequence of rooms.

القواعد والآداب في National Gallery

Photography without flash is permitted throughout most of the permanent collection, though specific loan works or rooms may carry individual restrictions marked by signage at the doorway; tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed. Large bags and rucksacks over roughly A3 size must go through the free cloakroom near the main entrance, and security screening with bag checks operates at all public entrances.

Sketching with pencil is permitted in the galleries for visitors bringing their own paper and a small board, a long-standing Gallery tradition, but pens, paints, and easels are not. The Sainsbury Wing entrance and the main Trafalgar Square (Getty) entrance lead to different parts of the collection, and confusing the two during a timed-exhibition booking is a common cause of missed entry slots.

Guided tours run by the Gallery's own staff are free and depart from the Information Desk at scheduled times, typically late morning and early afternoon; independent tour operators cluster outside the portico on Trafalgar Square and are not affiliated with the Gallery.

نصائح لزيارة National Gallery

  1. 1

The National Gallery's collection is organised roughly chronologically across four wings, and the single most photographed room — housing Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Turner's The Fighting Temeraire — sits in the East Wing, reachable in ten minutes by following the room numbers rather than wandering.

  2. 2

Friday evening opening until 21:00 is the least-crowded regular slot in the week; the Gallery also periodically hosts late-opening events with talks and music, announced on the What's On page closer to the date. The ground-floor café inside the Sainsbury Wing is less crowded than the basement Locatelli restaurant and suits a quick coffee between wings.

  3. 3

Trafalgar Square, with Nelson's Column and the fountains, is a natural pause point outside, and the National Portrait Gallery is a five-minute walk northeast for visitors wanting a second free collection in the same outing. Pickpocket activity in the square is a known, if modest, risk around the fountains and street performers; bags are safer kept zipped and to the front.
