Über Karnak Temple Complex

Karnak Temple charges foreign adults EGP 600 as of 2026, the highest general-entry price on Luxor's east bank, and it earns the fee in sheer bulk. The complex covers roughly 100 hectares of sandstone pylons, obelisks, courtyards and sanctuaries, and it was built up over about 2,000 years as the cult centre of the god Amun-Ra in ancient Thebes. Its Great Hypostyle Hall holds 134 columns in 16 rows across about 5,000 square metres, with the tallest columns reaching 21 metres. Karnak Temple rewards a slow, early walk. Allow three hours for the central Amun-Ra precinct alone, and more if you add the Open-Air Museum and the sacred lake.

Beste Tageszeit: 06:00 - 08:30. When the sandstone is cool, the sun rakes low through the Hypostyle Hall and tour coaches from the Nile cruise boats have not arrived.

Sandstone is cool, low sun rakes the Hypostyle Hall columns and the only people are photographers and early tour groups.

    Quiet
  2. 08:30 - 12:00

    Cruise-Group Rush

Coaches from Nile cruise boats and Valley of the Kings tours converge; the Hypostyle Hall becomes a slow shuffle and guides hold groups at the sacred lake.

Geschichte von Karnak Temple Complex

Karnak Temple began around 1970 BC under Senusret I of the Middle Kingdom and was extended by almost every dynasty until the Ptolemaic period (305-30 BC), with most of the standing stone dating to the New Kingdom. Pharaohs competed to add pylons, obelisks and halls, which is why the plan reads as layers rather than a single design. Hatshepsut raised twin obelisks here; one still stands and is the second-tallest ancient obelisk still standing anywhere.

The Hypostyle Hall was built in the Nineteenth Dynasty and decorated under Seti I and Ramesses II. Karnak was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979 as part of Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis. Stone from Gebel el-Silsila's sandstone quarries was floated down the Nile for much of the construction. A processional Avenue of Sphinxes, about 2.5 km long, links Karnak with Luxor Temple and was reopened in November 2021.

Regeln & Etikette in Karnak Temple Complex

Karnak Temple visitors may not climb on walls, columns or fallen blocks, and guards whistle and enforce this in the Hypostyle Hall. Tripods and drones need a written permit, and professional filming is separately licensed. Mobile phone photography is normal, but stand-alone camera rules at Egyptian sites have changed several times, so ask at the gate.

Karnak Temple enforces no formal dress code, yet shoulders and knees covered is the sensible norm in the summer sun and for photographs inside the sanctuary. Security screening at the gate is routine. Unofficial guides work the entrance and inside the halls; agree a price first, or decline politely, and tip site guards who unlock or point out closed chapels at EGP 20-50. Touching the reliefs is discouraged because oils from skin degrade the sandstone paint.

Tipps für den Besuch von Karnak Temple Complex

  1. 1

Karnak Temple queues are shortest at 06:00 opening, and coach groups arrive from about 09:00, so start at the Hypostyle Hall and work back toward the entrance. Walk behind the Hypostyle Hall to the Hatshepsut obelisk and the sacred lake before the buses catch up, and do not skip the Open-Air Museum, which reassembles the Chapelle Rouge and the White Chapel of Senusret I from thousands of blocks.

  2. 2

Karnak Temple has almost no shade in the central courts. Carry at least a litre of water per person and a hat, and note that summer afternoons above 40 C are common. Calèche drivers at the gate quote inflated fares to Luxor Temple, so agree a price in Egyptian pounds before you board, or walk the Nile-side Corniche instead. The evening Sound and Light show is a separate ticket; confirm the language schedule at the gate.
