Über Namgyal Monastery

Namgyal Monastery re-established itself in McLeod Ganj in 1959–60 as the personal monastery of the 14th Dalai Lama, after the Second Dalai Lama first founded it in Lhasa in 1564–65 under the name Phende Lekshe Ling. Namgyal Monastery took its present name in 1571, honouring the long-life deity Namgyälma, and was historically housed within the red-walled Potala Palace section built in Lhasa by the Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century.
