Naini Lake sits at 1,938 metres and measures roughly 1,432 metres in length by 460 metres at its widest point, a crescent moon-shaped basin trapped between seven forested hills that gives the town its name and its layout. The Mall Road runs along its eastern shore, connecting the two settlement clusters of Mallital to the north and Tallital to the south, so the water is never more than a few minutes' walk from any point in central Nainital. Naini Lake gave Nainital its name after the British statistician and trader P. Barron reportedly came upon it in 1841, guided by local accounts of a sacred pool linked to the goddess Naina Devi. Barron built the first European bungalow on its shore that same year, and within a decade the East India Company's officers were building a hill station around the water to escape the Gangetic plain's summer heat. The Naini Lake Boat Club, founded by the British in 1910, still operates from its original Mallital site and remains the sole licensing authority for lake boating.
The lake's most consequential historical event was catastrophic rather than ceremonial: on 18 September 1880, a landslide on the slope above the Naina Devi Temple killed around 151 people, including many sheltering in the Victoria Hotel, and buried part of the temple and the northern shore under debris. The disaster prompted the colonial government to commission drainage and slope-stabilisation engineering around the lake basin that is still referenced in current municipal planning.
