Über St. John in the Wilderness Church
St. John in the Wilderness Church stands among deodar trees at the edge of Mallital, one of Nainital's oldest surviving buildings and among the earliest Anglican churches built in the Kumaon hills. Bishop Daniel Wilson approved the site in 1844, only three years after Nainital's discovery as a hill station, and the cornerstone was laid in October 1846; the building, designed in a plain Gothic style by the executive engineer Captain Young at a cost of ₹15,000 raised through private subscriptions and pew rents, was consecrated on 2 April 1848. The church's name reflects the raw, newly settled state of the hill station at the time of its founding — Wilson is said to have chosen 'Wilderness' after falling ill while staying in an unfinished cottage on the forest's edge nearby, and the name has stuck through nearly two centuries of subsequent development around it.

St. John in the Wilderness Church's construction between 1846 and 1848 coincided with Nainital's rapid transformation from an obscure lake discovered by the trader P. Barron in 1841 into an established British hill station with a resident colonial administration. Its Gothic stone construction, unusual for the period and location, signalled the permanence the colonial community expected of their new settlement.
The adjoining cemetery holds graves dating from 1845 to around 1922, the last recorded burial being that of Sir George Knox; among the graves are those of Christopher William and Mary Jane Corbett, the parents of the hunter-naturalist Jim Corbett, who lived at nearby Gurney House. A memorial inside the church commemorates victims of the 18 September 1880 landslide that killed around 151 people on the slope above Naina Devi Temple, linking the building directly to the town's defining 19th-century disaster.
