Sobre Vienna State Opera
The Vienna State Opera guided tour costs EUR 18 for adults aged 27 and over, as of 2026, and standing-room tickets for a performance start at EUR 4 with a BT-Card. The Wiener Staatsoper is a neo-Renaissance building of pale limestone on the Ringstrasse, opened on 25 May 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni, and it remains one of the world's busiest opera houses with a season running from September to June. Vienna State Opera's main auditorium is a horseshoe of tiered boxes in red and gold with a cascade of chandelier light, rebuilt after the 1945 bombing in a modernised version of the original. The 40-minute tour shows the auditorium, the tea salon, the former imperial intermission rooms and the iron curtain, and the standing places at the back and sides are among the cheapest ways to hear a full-length performance.

Historia de Vienna State Opera
Vienna State Opera was designed by the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, the first major building on the new Ringstrasse boulevard, and it opened in 1869 as the Court Opera. Contemporary critics disliked the design, and van der Nüll took his own life in April 1868, before the building was completed; Sicardsburg died soon after, and neither saw it finished.
Vienna State Opera was destroyed in the bombing of 12 March 1945, leaving the main facade, the foyer and the Schwind Foyer standing but the auditorium and stage lost. The house was rebuilt with a redesigned interior and reopened on 5 November 1955 with Beethoven's Fidelio, a symbol of Austria's post-war recovery after the State Treaty of the same year. The company today performs opera and ballet almost every evening in season, with the Vienna Philharmonic drawn from the opera orchestra.
Normas y etiqueta en Vienna State Opera
Vienna State Opera does not enforce a strict dress code, but smart casual is the norm for stalls and boxes, and dark suits and evening dresses appear at premieres. Standing places are more relaxed, but beachwear looks out of place. Phones must be silent, and flash photography is forbidden inside the auditorium during performances.
Vienna State Opera sells a limited number of standing places on the day of each performance, and regulars are known to tie a scarf to the rail to hold a spot, so respect marked places. Each standing place has its own subtitle screen with up to eight languages, including English and German. Large bags and coats go in the cloakroom, and latecomers are usually admitted only at a break, not mid-act.
Consejos para visitar Vienna State Opera
- 1
Vienna State Opera standing-room tickets are the best value: they are sold only on the day of the performance, beginning at 10:00, through the official ticket shop, with a total of 435 standing positions. Popular titles sell out quickly once sales open, so be ready at 10:00, and check the seat-plan view when choosing a standing area, since some places have partial views.

Vienna State Opera tours are announced monthly, so check the official calendar and book early for weekends; the tour is offered in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Street sellers in period costume around the Opera sell overpriced concert tickets that are not for the State Opera itself, so buy performance tickets only from the official site or box office.
