Historia de Science World

Science World's building began as the Expo Centre, a Buckminster Fuller-inspired geodesic dome designed by Bruno Freschi for Expo 86. Construction ran from 1984 to early 1985, and the dome housed the fair's Transitions film series in a large-format theatre in its upper section.

Science World opened under that name on 6 May 1989, after the City of Vancouver transferred the Expo Centre building in 1987. A renovation followed the 2010 Winter Olympics, with indoor work finished by mid-2012, and the outdoor Ken Spencer Science Park was added in late 2012.

Science World also serves as a landmark: its exterior was given a soccer-ball design in May 2026 to mark Vancouver's role in the FIFA World Cup, and the dome's look may change again, so check what is on when you arrive. The dome's 400-seat OMNIMAX theatre remains part of the museum, in the upper part of the sphere.

Normas y etiqueta en Science World

Science World sells tickets online and on site, and dynamic pricing may apply, so check the calendar before you travel. Outside food is allowed but officially discouraged, per a 2026 guide.

Science World's galleries are hands-on, so exhibits are built to be touched, but children should not climb or lean on displays. Keep bags close and travel light. School groups arrive between about 11:00 and 13:00, and noise levels are high.

Science World's dome has stairs and ramps between levels, so ask at the entrance about accessible routes and any quieter hours or sensory supports, since programs change by season.

Consejos para visitar Science World

  1. 1

Science World is directly across the street from Main Street-Science World Station on the Expo Line, so skip the car if you can. On-site parking costs about CAD 4.50 per hour or CAD 18 per day per a 2026 guide, and the False Creek seawall gives a pleasant walk from Olympic Village or Granville Island.

  2. 2

Science World is quietest at opening, and school groups fill the galleries from about 11:00 to 13:00. Buy an OMNIMAX add-on with your ticket, since film times are limited, and check that day's schedule and any dynamic pricing at scienceworld.ca.

  3. 3

Science World suits children aged 3-12 best, and the outdoor Ken Spencer Science Park, added in 2012, is worth a stop. Allow three to four hours, eat before or after to avoid lunchtime queues, and consider a membership if you plan two visits, since an individual annual membership is listed at CAD 135 in a 2026 guide.
