Sobre Athens
The city has been continuously inhabited for roughly 7,000 years and served as the birthplace of democratic governance under reforms beginning with Solon in 594 BCE and Cleisthenes in 508 BCE, a civic history still legible in the layout of the Ancient Agora and Kerameikos. Modern Athens took its current shape only after 1834, when the small Ottoman-era town of a few thousand residents became capital of the newly independent Greek state and was rebuilt in a neoclassical style by Bavarian and Greek architects; that 19th-century layer survives most visibly in Plaka and around Syntagma Square. Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), 32 km southeast of the centre, connects directly to Syntagma via metro Line 3 in about 40 minutes, while Piraeus, 10 km southwest, handles ferry connections to the islands and links to the centre via metro Line 1. The Athens Metro's three lines and a growing tram network cover the main archaeological and museum circuit well enough that a rental car is unnecessary for a city visit. May, June, September, and early October offer the most workable combination of manageable heat and thinner crowds; July and August bring temperatures regularly above 35°C and the heaviest visitor numbers at the Acropolis, while winter (November–March) is mild, quieter, and comes with shorter site hours.
