Mall Road runs for roughly 1.5 kilometres along the eastern shore of Naini Lake, connecting the Mallital settlement in the north to Tallital in the south, and carries the official name Govind Ballabh Pant Marg even though almost no one in Nainital uses it. The road was laid out by the British between 1841 and 1885 as the social spine of the hill station, originally called Government House Road for its proximity to the colonial administrative buildings, and its function has not changed much since: it is still where the town eats, shops, and walks in the evening.
