Bangkok became Thailand's capital in 1782, when Rama I moved the seat of the Chakri dynasty across the Chao Phraya River from Taksin's short-lived Thonburi capital, and laid out the Rattanakosin old town as a walled royal island bounded by river and canal.

Sobre Bangkok

The city's historic core — the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun across the river — remains its most compact sightseeing district, walkable in a single day, while the modern business and shopping districts around Siam, Sukhumvit, and Silom developed through the 20th century along the routes of Bangkok's later road and rail expansion.

Transport is the defining practical fact of visiting Bangkok: the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway cover the modern city efficiently but do not reach the old town directly, where the Chao Phraya Express Boat network fills the gap and often outpaces road traffic for river-adjacent sights. Traffic congestion is a genuine and persistent problem rather than an occasional inconvenience, making the choice between rail, river, and road a real planning decision rather than a formality.

The cool season, November through February, is the most comfortable window for walking-heavy old-town sightseeing, with daytime temperatures typically in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius and lower humidity than the rest of the year. Thai etiquette around the monarchy carries legal weight — criticism of the royal family is a criminal offence under lese-majeste law — and temple visits throughout the city require covered shoulders and knees, a dress code enforced at the gate rather than treated as a suggestion.
