À propos de Summer Palace

Summer Palace charges CNY 30 for park entry from 1 April to 31 October and CNY 20 from 1 November to 31 March, as of 2026, with a through ticket at CNY 60 or CNY 50 covering the main paid sites. The palace covers about 3 square kilometres, three quarters of it water, and its centrepiece is Kunming Lake, dug in the 1750s and overlooked by Longevity Hill, crowned by the Tower of Buddhist Incense on a stone terrace. The Long Corridor, a painted timber walkway of 728 metres, runs along the lake's northern shore under thousands of painted scenes, and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge links the shore to South Lake Island. Summer Palace was modelled in part on the lakes and causeways of Hangzhou's West Lake, and its lakeside marble, cypress and pavilions make it the coolest large imperial site in Beijing during July heat.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Opening time to 10:00. When the Long Corridor and the hill are quiet and the lake mirrors the pagodas in soft light.

Histoire de Summer Palace

Summer Palace grew from 12th-century Jin dynasty lake works, but its present form dates from 1750, when the Qianlong Emperor built the Garden of Clear Ripples to mark his mother's 60th birthday, enlarging the lake and adding the Longevity Hill temples. Anglo-French forces burned the gardens in 1860 during the Second Opium War, leaving much of Longevity Hill in ruins.

The Empress Dowager Cixi ordered a rebuild from about 1886 and renamed the site Yiheyuan in 1888. The popular claim that she diverted naval funds to pay for it is widely repeated, but historians disagree about how much money was actually moved, so treat the figure as disputed. Foreign troops looted the palace again in 1900, and Cixi restored it a second time. It became a public park in 1924, and UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1998. The Marble Boat, a stone-hulled pavilion at the lake's edge, dates from the Qianlong period, with a paddle-wheel superstructure added under Cixi.

Règles et étiquette à Summer Palace

Summer Palace uses real-name tickets that require a passport, and the through ticket is worth buying only if you plan to climb to the Tower of Buddhist Incense and walk Suzhou Street. Bags are X-rayed at each gate, and the palace has four main gates (East, North, New Palace, and South), so pick the one nearest your route to avoid backtracking across 3 square kilometres.

Summer Palace prohibits drones, and tripods on the Long Corridor block a walkway that turns crowded in the afternoon. Dress modestly for the Buddhist halls, and do not lean on the marble railings of the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, whose hundreds of lion carvings are fragile. Boat operators on the lake charge fixed fares at the pier; anyone offering private rides on the shore at a lower price is unlicensed, and lakeside food stalls charge steep tourist prices.

Conseils pour visiter Summer Palace

  1. 1

Summer Palace works best entered through the East Palace Gate at Xiyuan station, walking west along the Long Corridor, then climbing Longevity Hill and exiting by the north gate at Beigongmen; this route keeps the steepest climb early. The steps up to the Tower of Buddhist Incense are steep and reward with a view over the lake and, on clear days, the Western Hills.

  2. 2

Summer Palace has very little shade on the causeways in July and August, so bring water and sun protection, and check the Beijing air quality index before going in winter, when haze mutes the view. Allow at least three hours, since the grounds are large and the lakeside loop is long.
