À propos de Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square is free to enter, as of 2026, but requires a free real-name reservation made in advance through an official WeChat mini-program, using a passport number for foreign visitors. The square is a vast paved expanse in central Beijing, commonly cited at about 440,000 square metres (sources differ on exact dimensions), bounded by the Great Hall of the People on the west, the National Museum of China on the east, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall at the centre and the Zhengyangmen gate towers on the south. The granite Monument to the People's Heroes, an obelisk of about 38 metres finished in 1958, stands on the central axis, and the national flagpole raises the flag at sunrise each day. The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen) faces the square from the north and marks the entrance to the Forbidden City.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Around sunrise for the flag-raising. Or late afternoon before the flag-lowering, when the crowd is smaller and the light crosses the square from the west.

Histoire de Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square takes its name from the Gate of Heavenly Peace, first built in 1420 and rebuilt several times after fires; the square itself was laid out around 1651 as a narrow, walled court in front of the imperial city. The government enlarged it roughly fourfold in the 1950s, clearing the surrounding buildings to hold mass rallies.

Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from the gate on 1 October 1949. The Great Hall of the People and the National Museum went up in 1958-59 for the tenth anniversary of that date, and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall opened in 1977 after Mao's death. The square has also been the site of the May Fourth Movement in 1919 and the 1976 Qingming demonstrations, and of the June 1989 protests, which ended in a military crackdown that Chinese authorities do not discuss publicly.

Règles et étiquette à Tiananmen Square

Tiananmen Square admits only visitors holding a reservation for a specific time slot, and staff turn away anyone who arrives without one or outside their slot. Foreign visitors present the passport used for booking at the security checkpoint, and airport-style screening typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, longer on public holidays. A standard morning slot does not admit visitors before the flag-raising ends; the flag-raising is a separate slot that fills quickly.

Tiananmen Square prohibits lighters, knives, drones and other restricted items, and police may look through phones and bags at their discretion. Political slogans, banners, leaflets and unauthorised filming of security personnel invite detention, so keep behaviour low-key. Visitors follow a one-way route, and photography of the flag ceremony is permitted from designated areas.

Conseils pour visiter Tiananmen Square

  1. 1

Tiananmen Square visitors save time by entering from the south at Qianmen station, where the security queue is usually shorter than at Tiananmen East, then walking north toward the gate. The flag-raising ceremony requires a booking one to nine days ahead and an arrival at least 60 to 90 minutes early, so plan on a pre-dawn start; the sunset lowering ceremony is far quieter.

  2. 2

Tiananmen Square has no shade or seating, so carry water and sun protection from May to September. The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall opens Tuesday to Sunday mornings on a separate reservation and closes Mondays. On Mondays, when the Forbidden City is shut, the square receives extra visitors. Ignore strangers offering 'tea house' or 'art student' invitations near the entrances, a well-known scam.
