À propos de Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
The Temple of Hatshepsut charges foreign adults EGP 440 as of 2026 and rises in three limestone terraces against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, on Luxor's west bank. The lowest terrace measures about 120 by 75 metres, and the whole mortuary temple was built between the seventh and twentieth years of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut's reign in the Eighteenth Dynasty. The Temple of Hatshepsut is stark and horizontal, with pale limestone against ochre cliffs, and it photographs best in early light. The temple lies about 7 km by road from the Valley of the Kings, and most visitors reach both on the same hired car or coach run.
Meilleur moment de la journée : 06:00 - 08:00. Before the sun clears the cliff edge and the terraces bake.

Histoire de Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
The Temple of Hatshepsut was built between roughly Hatshepsut's seventh and twentieth regnal years, with several design changes along the way. The architect is not certain: Senenmut, overseer of works, is the usual attribution, though Hapuseneb, the high priest, is another candidate. The temple takes its layout from the older Middle Kingdom temple of Mentuhotep II beside it.
The middle terrace carries the famous reliefs of the expedition to the Land of Punt and the divine-birth narrative that legitimised Hatshepsut's rule. About two decades after her death, Thutmose III ordered her images scratched out and statues broken up, a campaign later abandoned under Amenhotep II. The Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology has restored the temple since 1961, with sections reopening to visitors from 2000. On 17 November 1997 an attack on the terraces killed 62 people, mostly tourists, and security here is visible today.
Règles et étiquette à Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
Temple of Hatshepsut visitors go through security checks at the entrance, and tourism police are present. Climbing on ramps, terraces or the Osiride statues is forbidden and guards enforce it. Drones are banned near the cliffs, and tripods need a permit.
Temple of Hatshepsut does not enforce a dress code inside, but cover shoulders and knees; the cliff basin has almost no shade and reflects heat. Flash photography degrades the painted reliefs, and touching the colour on the ceilings and Punt scenes is prohibited. Unofficial guides operate on the ramps; decline politely or agree a fee before they start, and tip site guards EGP 20-50 for opening the shrines of Hathor and Anubis.
Conseils pour visiter Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
- 1
Temple of Hatshepsut is hot by 09:00 and the terraces have no shade, so arrive at opening and go straight up. The taf-taf electric shuttle from the car park spares the long walk in the sun and is worth taking in summer.
- 2
Temple of Hatshepsut pairs naturally with the Valley of the Kings, about 7 km away by car, and most drivers combine the two on the same morning. Look at the Hathor chapel columns on the north end of the middle terrace, and the small Anubis chapel to its south, which keep more colour than the main terraces. Buy water before you enter because prices at the car park stalls are inflated. The polished, restored look of the terraces is a modern reconstruction by the Polish mission, so expect sections of new limestone.
