À propos de Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings charges foreign adults EGP 750 as of 2026, and that ticket covers only three tombs. Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62), Seti I (KV17), Ramesses V and VI (KV9) and the West Valley's Tomb of Ay are sold on top. Sixty-five tombs and chambers are numbered here, cut over nearly 500 years, from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasty, in the limestone valley behind Luxor's west bank. The Valley of the Kings is a dry wadi with tombs entered by stairways, and the queues, the heat and the ticket structure matter as much as the wall paintings.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 06:00 - 08:00. When the valley is at its coolest and the tomb entrances have no queues.

Histoire de Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings became the royal burial ground in the Eighteenth Dynasty, when pharaohs abandoned pyramids for hidden rock-cut tombs; Thutmose I is traditionally credited with the change, though which tomb was his is disputed. Pharaohs were buried here in tombs cut into limestone from about 1539 to 1075 BC. Flash floods periodically flooded chambers, and robbers emptied nearly every tomb in antiquity.

Howard Carter found Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) in November 1922, the first royal tomb discovered largely intact; its contents are now at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, while the boy king's mummy lies in a glass case inside the tomb. Giovanni Belzoni located Seti I's tomb (KV17) in 1817, and it is usually regarded as the finest in the valley, with its alabaster sarcophagus in the Sir John Soane's Museum in London. Ramesses VI's tomb (KV9) holds over a thousand Greek, Latin and Coptic graffiti left by ancient tourists. The valley was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979 with the rest of Ancient Thebes.

Règles et étiquette à Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings visitors may not touch the painted walls, and guards enforce this by hand. Photography with a phone is permitted at no charge as of 2026, but stand-alone cameras and flash are treated inconsistently, so ask before you shoot in each tomb. Drones are banned.

Valley of the Kings guards inside tombs often offer to switch on lights or point out details and then expect baksheesh; EGP 20-50 is customary and a firm refusal is acceptable. Keep your ticket, since tomb attendants tear off a section at every entrance. Payment at the ticket office is by card only as of 2026. Modest, light clothing and closed shoes suit the dusty, slippery stairs. Tomb air is thick with dust and stale; skip Seti I if you have breathing difficulty.

Conseils pour visiter Valley of the Kings

  1. 1

Valley of the Kings tombs on the base ticket rotate, so read the list at the ticket office and pick the three with the best paintings that day; Ramesses IV, Ramesses IX and Merenptah are commonly on offer. Buy the KV62 ticket separately only if you want the tomb itself, because the objects that made Tutankhamun famous are in Giza, and the tomb is small.

  2. 2

Valley of the Kings spreads over a wide floor, and the shuttle tram costs about EGP 20 round trip for the short haul from the visitor centre to the tomb cluster. The 10:00-14:00 window is the most crowded and hottest time. Ramesses V and VI (KV9) is the best value supplement at EGP 220, with its astronomical ceilings. The Tomb of Ay in the West Valley needs a separate ticket and a further drive, so treat it as an optional extra.
