À propos de Lazio

Lazio occupies west-central Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, wrapped around Rome, its regional capital and Italy's national capital simultaneously. The region's geography splits into a coastal plain running south from the mouth of the Tiber, the volcanic Alban Hills (Castelli Romani) southeast of Rome ringing several crater lakes, and the more rugged, thinly populated Ciociaria hill country toward the regional borders with Campania and Abruzzo. Inside Rome itself sits Vatican City, a fully independent sovereign state under the Holy See rather than Lazio or Italian territory, though every practical travel connection — airports, trains, hotels — runs through the surrounding Roman infrastructure.

Beyond Rome, Lazio holds a dense concentration of pre-Roman and Roman heritage: Etruscan necropolises at Cerveteri and Tarquinia (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the Roman port ruins of Ostia Antica, and Emperor Hadrian's villa complex and the Renaissance gardens of Villa d'Este, both at Tivoli and also UNESCO-listed. The Castelli Romani hill towns southeast of the capital add a wine-and-food dimension largely separate from the capital's monument-heavy itinerary.

April through June and September through October give Lazio's best travel conditions, with mild temperatures suited to walking extensive outdoor archaeological sites. Summer (July-August) brings strong heat, particularly inland, and many smaller family-run businesses close for stretches around the mid-August Ferragosto holiday; winter is mild by northern European standards but several sites reduce hours and some coastal towns operate on a skeleton seasonal schedule.

Cerveteri (Necropoli della Banditaccia)
