À propos de Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah is an artificial archipelago built roughly 5 kilometres out into the Persian Gulf in the shape of a palm tree, formed from approximately 94 million cubic metres of dredged sand and protected by an 11-kilometre rock breakwater ringing its outer crescent. The island adds an estimated 78 kilometres of new coastline to Dubai's shore and was constructed using a sand-vibrocompaction technique combined with GPS-guided dredging, a method that allowed engineers to shape the trunk, 16 fronds, and surrounding crescent to design tolerances without a fixed onshore mould. The island now carries thousands of villas along its 16 fronds, high-rise apartment towers along the trunk, and a cluster of resort hotels along the crescent, including Atlantis The Palm at the crescent's tip. The Pointe, a beachfront dining and entertainment promenade near the trunk's base, anchors the island's main free public gathering space, fronted by a large choreographed fountain that performs after dark.

Histoire de Palm Jumeirah

Nakheel Properties, a Dubai government-backed developer, began construction on Palm Jumeirah in 2001 as the first and smallest of a planned set of palm-shaped island developments along the Dubai coast, with land reclamation using dredged sand from the Gulf seabed rather than imported rock or quarried material. The project drew international engineering attention for its scale and for the specialised GPS-controlled dredging and sand-compaction techniques developed specifically for it.

Villa and apartment handovers began in the mid-2000s, and Atlantis The Palm opened at the crescent's outer tip in September 2008, becoming the island's anchor hospitality landmark. The Palm Monorail, connecting the trunk to the crescent, opened in 2009, followed by later additions including the Palm Tower's observation deck and The Pointe's dining promenade, which extended the island's public, non-residential draw well beyond its original residential concept.

Règles et étiquette à Palm Jumeirah

Public beach access points along the trunk and at The Pointe are free and open to all, though many of the island's beaches front private resorts and residential buildings where access is restricted to guests and residents - checking whether a specific stretch is public before setting up for the day avoids being asked to move on. Dress code at public areas is casual beachwear-appropriate, though swimwear should stay near the beach itself rather than the dining and retail sections of The Pointe.

Alcohol is available only inside licensed hotel and restaurant venues on the island, consistent with UAE-wide licensing law. Drone photography anywhere on or near Palm Jumeirah, including over the water, requires a permit from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority given the island's dense residential and hotel airspace.

Conseils pour visiter Palm Jumeirah

  1. 1

The Palm Monorail is the most straightforward way to see the island's full layout without a car, running from Palm Gateway at the trunk's base out to Atlantis on the crescent in about 12-15 minutes, with a stop at The Pointe/Nakheel Mall along the way - buying the all-station day pass is worthwhile for anyone planning to get on and off at multiple stops.

  2. 2

For an elevated view of the palm shape itself, the observation deck at The View at The Palm, inside the Palm Tower near the trunk's base, gives a 240-metre-high vantage point over the fronds and crescent that is difficult to appreciate from ground level. The Pointe's evening fountain show, free to watch from the promenade, is best combined with an early dinner reservation at one of the waterfront restaurants to secure a seated view without competing for standing-room space at showtime.
