Egypt is a desert country whose life follows the Nile, and its travel seasons follow the heat: October to April is the comfortable window for monuments, with daytime highs of about 20-28 C in Cairo, while June to August regularly passes 35 C and makes midday sightseeing at Giza, Saqqara and Luxor punishing. Cairo, the capital and the country's largest city, holds the Giza pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, medieval Islamic Cairo and the Coptic quarter within one metropolitan area, and tour routes usually add day trips to Alexandria and flights to Luxor and Aswan. Monuments run by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities charge foreign visitors several times the Egyptian price, and card payment has largely replaced cash at major sites, so carry a Visa or Mastercard. Ramadan changes opening hours and daytime restaurant service, and Friday is the weekly day of prayer, when mosques restrict visitors around midday. Modest dress, with shoulders and knees covered, is expected at mosques and churches and is sensible in the old city. Tipping (baksheesh) is part of daily life: small tips of EGP 10-50 for porters, guards who open tombs, and drivers are customary, and restaurants often add a service charge that does not replace a tip. Bargaining is expected in bazaars, and licensed guides carry Ministry of Tourism identification.
