The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers moderated slightly along the coast by sea breezes, and mild, wetter winters; Athens's urban heat island effect makes the city centre noticeably warmer than surrounding coastal towns during peak summer months. Travel through the region concentrates heavily on Athens as both the arrival point (via Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport) and the transport hub for onward island ferries from Piraeus or Rafina, making a multi-day Athens base with day or overnight trips into the wider region the standard pattern for visitors.
