Dharamshala became the administrative headquarters of Kangra district in 1855, and the British established a garrison for Gurkha regiments on the ridge above it that would become McLeod Ganj by the 1850s–60s. The 1905 Kangra earthquake killed roughly 1,625 people in the Dharamshala area and destroyed much of the colonial-era construction, which is why little pre-1905 British architecture survives intact.

The town's modern identity dates to 1959–60.
