Odisha occupies the eastern seaboard of India, flanked by the Bay of Bengal to the east and the Eastern Ghats to the west, a geography that has defined both its trade history and its spiritual character. For centuries this was Kalinga — the kingdom whose battlefield defeat in 261 BCE compelled Emperor Ashoka to abandon warfare and embrace Buddhism, a pivot that altered the trajectory of an entire subcontinent. That violent transformation left no architectural remains, but what followed did: a tradition of temple construction so prolific that Bhubaneswar alone earned its reputation as the City of Temples, once home to an estimated seven thousand shrines, of which some five hundred survive in various states of preservation.

The state's built heritage clusters around three axes. Bhubaneswar contains the Lingaraj Temple complex and the Parasuramesvara shrine, examples of Kalinga-style architecture with its distinctive deul tower and jagamohan (assembly hall). Puri, 60 kilometres to the south, holds the Jagannath Temple — one of the four sacred dhams of Hindu pilgrimage, its 65-metre shikhara visible from the sea. And 35 kilometres northeast of Puri, the Konark Sun Temple stands as the summit of Ganga-dynasty ambition: a colossal stone chariot designed to carry the sun god across the sky, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Beyond the temple circuit, Odisha possesses a coastline of considerable drama: Chilika Lake, Asia's largest coastal lagoon, hosts the Irrawaddy dolphin and wintering flamingos; Bhitarkanika shelters saltwater crocodiles in its mangrove channels; Gopalpur-on-Sea and Chandipur offer beaches without the pilgrim density of Puri. Tribal Odisha — the Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri districts — harbours weekly haat markets where Dongria Kondh, Bonda, and Gadaba communities trade in brass, textile, and grain, largely unchanged in commercial custom for generations.

The best period to visit is October through February, when the Bay of Bengal's post-monsoon humidity relents and temperatures sit between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid May and June: coastal temperatures exceed 38°C and humidity is suffocating. The Rath Yatra chariot festival in Puri, held on the second day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha (typically June–July), draws crowds measured in the millions — logistically formidable but visually singular.
