Hungary has a continental climate with hot summers, when July daytime highs regularly reach the high 20s Celsius and often the 30s, and cold winters from December to February with occasional snow and temperatures around or below 0 degrees Celsius. Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) are the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing, and the Christmas market season in December draws a separate winter wave to Budapest. Public holidays include 15 March, 20 August (St Stephen's Day) and 23 October, when some sights waive entry fees or close, so check opening times before those dates. The Hungarian forint is the currency, cards are widely accepted in cities, and street currency exchange booths and euro-priced menus in tourist districts often carry unfavourable rates, so withdraw forint at a bank ATM and decline dynamic currency conversion. Tipping is customary at around 10-15 percent in restaurants, handed to the server or added to the card total, and some tourist restaurants add a service charge of 12-13 percent to the bill, so check the receipt before tipping again. Hungarian is unrelated to most European languages, English is widely spoken in Budapest's tourist areas but less so in villages, and greetings and thank-yous in Hungarian (Jó napot, Köszönöm) are appreciated. Trains and buses link Budapest to Vienna in roughly 2.5-3 hours, and Budapest is the hub of the country's rail and road network.
