About Budapest

The city took its present form in 1873, when Buda, Pest and Óbuda merged into a single municipality, and the Danube banks and the Buda Castle Quarter have been on UNESCO's World Heritage list since 1987, with Andrássy Avenue added in 2002. Buda, on the west bank, rises into hills topped by Buda Castle and Gellért Hill, while Pest, on the east bank, is flat and holds Parliament, the Basilica, the main market hall and most hotels. Bridges link the two sides, and the Chain Bridge, opened in 1849, was the first permanent one.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) lies about 20 kilometres south-east of the centre; the 100E airport bus runs to Deák Ferenc tér, the central interchange for metro lines M1, M2 and M3. Budapest has the oldest underground railway on the European continent, opened in 1896 as the Millennium Underground (now M1), and it is supplemented by trams, buses, HÉV suburban railway and Danube boats. Most sights sit within a walkable core: the Parliament, Shoes on the Danube Bank, Chain Bridge and Basilica are all within about 2 kilometres on the Pest side, and Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church cluster on Castle Hill across the Chain Bridge.

April to June and September to October give the most reliable sightseeing weather, with July and August hot and busy. Winter is cold, but the thermal baths run all year, and the December Christmas markets draw a distinct visitor wave. The House of Terror closes on Mondays. Gellért Baths, one of the city's best-known baths, has been closed for renovation since 1 October 2025 with reopening planned for 2028, so it is not listed here.
