That lake, ringed by 52 bathing ghats, anchors both the town's religious identity — as one of Hinduism's five sacred dhams and the site of the world's most prominent Brahma-worship tradition — and its best-known logistical hazard, the ghat-side priest who offers an unsolicited blessing and then demands a substantial 'donation,' a well-worn routine every visitor should know before arriving. Unlike Jaipur, Udaipur, or Jodhpur, Pushkar is not a city built around a fort or palace complex but a compact, walkable pilgrim town wrapped around its lake, small enough that most of its temples, ghats, and bazaar lanes can be covered on foot within a single or a two-day visit, with a hilltop temple and viewpoint on either side of town rounding out a naturally paced itinerary. Its second identity, layered onto the first, comes from the 1960s and 1970s overland hippie trail: German bakeries, Israeli cafes, and a resident population of long-term Western travellers gave Pushkar a countercultural reputation that persists today in its bazaar's mix of silver jewellery stalls, tie-dye textiles, and rooftop cafes serving hummus alongside thali. For roughly ten days each October or November, culminating on Kartik Purnima, the town's population multiplies many times over for the Pushkar Camel Fair, one of the world's largest livestock gatherings and cultural spectacles, drawing herders from across the region alongside an international tourist audience. Transport hubs sit outside the town itself: Ajmer Junction handles the rail traffic, Kishangarh the nearest domestic flights, and Jaipur International Airport the wider international gateway roughly three hours distant.
