Mehrangarh Fort, built on that rock in red sandstone quarried from the outcrop itself, still dominates the skyline from almost every point in the old city, its ramparts visible above the rooftops the way a cathedral tower governs a European market town. The city that grew beneath it took its now-famous nickname from a specific and comparatively recent municipal decision: the Brahmin quarter's houses were painted a distinctive indigo-blue wash, originally understood locally as a caste marker and later, more plausibly, valued for its mild insect-repellent and heat-reflective properties in a desert climate, and the practice spread widely enough through the old city that 'Blue City' became shorthand for Jodhpur itself.
The old walled city, threaded with narrow lanes converging on Sardar Market and the Ghanta Ghar clock tower, sits directly below the fort and remains largely pedestrian in character despite motorbike and auto-rickshaw traffic squeezing through streets never designed for wheeled transport. Beyond the walls, the city spreads into a more conventional cantonment-era layout around Umaid Bhawan Palace, and further out again into the desert scrub where Kaylana Lake and Mandore's old royal grounds sit as half-day excursions rather than old-city walking stops.
Jodhpur Junction railway station and Jodhpur Airport, both a short drive from the fort, make the city one of the more straightforward Rajasthan bases to reach directly, and its position roughly midway between Jaipur and Jaisalmer places it naturally on any west-Rajasthan circuit rather than as an isolated stop.
