À propos de Buda Castle (Royal Palace)

Buda Castle covers the southern tip of Castle Hill, and access to its grounds is free of charge, as of 2026. The domed limestone palace above the Danube is Budapest's most visible piece of royal architecture, seen from every bridge and from the Pest embankment. The ticket-free terraces and courtyards, the Matthias Fountain and the bronze Turul bird by the dome are the main outdoor draws, while the Hungarian National Gallery occupies four of the palace wings. Buda Castle is both a UNESCO-listed landscape and a working cultural complex. Three institutions share the palace: the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the National Széchényi Library.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Early morning before 09:00. When the courtyards and the Danube-side terraces are empty, or after sunset when the palace facade is floodlit.

Histoire de Buda Castle (Royal Palace)

Buda Castle began as the residence of King Béla IV, who built the first royal palace here between 1247 and 1265 after the Mongol invasion. King Sigismund enlarged it in the early 1400s into what historians call one of the largest Gothic palaces in late-medieval Europe, and King Matthias Corvinus, after his 1476 marriage to Beatrice of Naples, added Renaissance halls and the Bibliotheca Corviniana, a manuscript library that made Buda a centre of Renaissance learning north of the Alps.

Buda Castle fell to the Ottomans in 1541 and decayed as a barracks and store. The 1686 siege that recaptured Buda left it in ruins after the Stephen's Tower powder magazine exploded. The Baroque palace of 1749-1769, built under Empress Maria Theresa to plans by Jean Nicolas Jadot, and the vast neo-Baroque expansion by Alajos Hauszmann from 1875 to 1912 form the outline seen today.

Buda Castle was gutted in the 1944-45 siege of Budapest, and postwar reconstruction favoured simplified interiors over historical accuracy, which is why the palace facades are Hauszmann's but few rooms preserve their original decoration. The Hungarian National Gallery, founded in 1957, later moved into buildings A-D of the palace. The medieval cellars and remains excavated after the war can be visited through the Budapest History Museum.

Règles et étiquette à Buda Castle (Royal Palace)

Buda Castle grounds have no entry gate, but the museums inside enforce their own rules on bags, cloakrooms and photography, so check at each ticket desk before carrying a large backpack into an exhibition. Coats and large bags are normally left at cloakrooms, and flash photography is restricted in most gallery rooms.

Buda Castle sits in a residential neighbourhood as well as a tourist district, and the terraces attract street performers and souvenir sellers during the day, so keep bags closed in the crowds. Drones are restricted over central Budapest, and visitors should check current rules before flying one near the palace.

Conseils pour visiter Buda Castle (Royal Palace)

  1. 1

Buda Castle is easiest to reach by walking across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and taking the Castle Hill Funicular from Clark Ádám tér, which shortens the steep climb; a signed staircase route from Clark Ádám tér is a free alternative that takes about 15 minutes. The Sikló runs on a timetable and closes periodically for maintenance, so check that before planning it as the only route up.

  2. 2

Buda Castle pairs naturally with Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church, both 10-15 minutes' walk north along Castle Hill; a sensible sequence is the National Gallery or History Museum first, then the church and the Bastion in the afternoon. Restaurants directly beside the palace and the main squares charge a visible premium for their location, so eat in the quieter streets around Úri utca or on the Pest side. The Danube-facing terraces near the Turul bird statue and the Matthias Fountain give the best views towards the Chain Bridge and Parliament.
