À propos de Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion charges HUF 1,700 for adults to climb its upper terraces, as of 2026, and is free outside the 09:00-21:00 paid window. The seven white limestone towers and cloister arcades above the Danube were built as a viewing terrace, not a fortification, and frame a panorama of the Pest riverfront, the Chain Bridge and the Parliament dome. Fisherman's Bastion sits directly beside Matthias Church on Castle Hill, so the two are usually visited together. The cheapest way to see the towers is at dawn or after the paid window, when the terraces are open without a ticket.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Before 09:00 or after the paid window closes. When the terraces are free and empty of tour groups; sunrise light falls on the Danube and the Parliament facade.

Histoire de Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion was designed by architect Frigyes Schulek and built between 1895 and 1902, with completion in 1905, in the years around the 1896 Millennium that marked 1,000 years since the Magyar settlement. Schulek used pale limestone with granite stairs on brick foundations in a neo-Romanesque style, with pointed cones on seven towers that represent the seven Magyar tribes who settled the Carpathian Basin in 895. A bronze equestrian statue of King Stephen I, by Alajos Stróbl, stands in the courtyard at the foot of the towers.

Fisherman's Bastion takes its name from the guild of fishermen said to have defended this stretch of the medieval wall, and from the fish market that once stood below the hill; the guild story is tradition rather than documented fact. The structure is ornamental, not defensive, and follows the line of the old Castle Hill wall. The bastion was damaged in the 1944-45 siege of Budapest and restored afterwards, and today it forms part of the Budapest UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Règles et étiquette à Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion terraces accept card payment only at the ticket desk, so bring a contactless card and not cash. The upper towers have steep stone steps and no lift, and the lower terraces are the only step-free part of the site.

Fisherman's Bastion is a public monument, and visitors should keep off the parapets and not lean over the arcade railings for photographs. Tripods and professional shoots are best arranged in advance, since tour groups stop on the same terraces. A cafe and a chapel operate on site, and cafe prices reflect the Danube views. Licensed guides with groups of 6 or more should show their guide identity at the desk to enter free.

Conseils pour visiter Fisherman's Bastion

  1. 1

Fisherman's Bastion is best visited at 08:00 or after 21:00, when the terraces are free and the tour groups have not yet arrived or have left. The paid zone covers the upper terraces and towers; visitors short on time can check on arrival which areas remain open free of charge.

  2. 2

Fisherman's Bastion terraces are crowded in summer and pickpocket-prone, and street vendors on Szentháromság tér sell souvenirs at inflated prices; buy Hungarian paprika or embroidery at the Great Market Hall instead. Combine the visit with Matthias Church next door, then walk down through the stairs on the Danube side to the Chain Bridge. Ticket desk queues grow around sunset in high summer, so buy earlier in the day.
