À propos de Great Market Hall
The Great Market Hall is free to enter and covers about 10,000 square metres under a steel roof, as of 2026, making it Budapest's largest and oldest indoor market. The neo-Gothic brick entrance faces Fővám tér, and the roof is covered in coloured Zsolnay ceramic tiles from Pécs. Inside, the ground floor sells paprika, sausage, cheese, pickles and pastry, the mezzanine holds hot-food counters, and the basement has fishmongers and butchers. Great Market Hall opens at 06:00 on weekdays, per the operator, so the ground floor is at its best before 09:00. Stalls are a mix of everyday shopping and souvenir trade, so prices vary widely between the ground floor and the gallery.
Meilleur moment de la journée : 07:00-09:30. On a weekday, when the produce stalls are freshly stocked and tour groups have not arrived; Saturday closes early, so go before noon.

Histoire de Great Market Hall
The Great Market Hall opened on 15 February 1897 to designs by the architect Samu Pecz, as the largest of five central market halls that the city built after the 1873 unification of Buda, Pest and Óbuda. The hall was conceived under Budapest's first mayor, Károly Kamermayer, and stands at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge near the Danube bank. The structure is a steel frame in brick, glass and iron, with a neo-Gothic entrance gate and three levels. The coloured Zsolnay ceramic roof tiles, made in Pécs, are the hall's best-known decorative detail, and the tiles were restored during the 1991-1997 works.
The Great Market Hall was heavily damaged in the Second World War and remained in poor condition until a thorough restoration began in 1991. The renovated hall reopened in 1997 and won the FIABCI Prix d'Excellence in 1999. Today the market is run by the city's municipal market-hall company, and its stalls sell a mix of fresh produce and tourist goods.
Règles et étiquette à Great Market Hall
Great Market Hall stallholders quote prices per kilogram or per 100 grams, and asking the price before ordering is standard, particularly for paprika, salami and Tokaji wine. Some stalls in tourist areas quote in euros; ask for the forint price and check the exchange rate on the receipt, since it may be less favourable than paying by card in forint.
Great Market Hall has no dress code, but strong smells and tight aisles mean large backpacks are a nuisance, and photography of stalls is fine but should be asked politely close-up. Pickpockets work the crowded aisles and the entrance queues, so keep bags zipped and in front. Tipping is not expected at counter stalls, and 10 percent is normal at mezzanine tables when service is not already included. Sunday and holiday hours differ between sources, so confirm before travelling.
Conseils pour visiter Great Market Hall
- 1
Great Market Hall is best visited early on a weekday, when the ground-floor stalls are freshly stocked and the mezzanine counters have not yet filled with tour groups. Compare paprika, salami and Tokaji wine prices between two or three stalls before buying, and check the weight on the scale; the gallery stalls charge more for souvenirs than the ground-floor grocers.
- 2
Great Market Hall's mezzanine lángos and fried-dough counters are popular but can be overpriced, so eat at a counter where locals queue, and share portions. If the prices look inflated, buy paprika in sealed bags from the ground-floor grocers. A short walk from Fővám tér leads to Liberty Bridge and to Váci utca, a shopping street with visitor pricing that is better avoided for food.
