The city is compact by the standards of a state capital: the core market, the Secretariat, the royal palace enclosure of Tsuklakhang, and the cable car station are all within 2–3 kilometres of each other. What makes Gangtok work as a base rather than a destination in itself is its function as the permit hub for everything further afield.

The city was capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim from the 19th century until 1975, and the architecture of the old palace quarter — whitewashed stone walls, wooden lattice windows, monastery courtyards — survives in pockets above the new construction. The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, founded in 1958, holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts and thangka paintings outside Tibet itself, including palm-leaf manuscripts in Sanskrit. The Enchey Monastery, perched at the northern edge of the ridge, dates to 1909 and is associated with the Nyingma sect; it becomes the site of the dramatic Detor Cham mask-dance festival over two days in January, the exact Gregorian date shifting with the Tibetan lunar calendar.

Practically: all taxis in Gangtok are metered in theory but negotiated in practice. The standard rate for a car from SNT Bus Stand to Rumtek Monastery (24 km away) is ₹800–₹1,000 for a private taxi round-trip with waiting. Permits for Nathu La and Tsomgo Lake are issued from the Tourism and Civil Aviation department on Tibet Road; bring original ID (Aadhaar or passport) and two passport photos. Online permit applications are not reliably processed — appear in person by 9 AM. The ropeway (cable car) linking Deorali, Namnang, and Tashiling runs 9 AM to 5 PM daily (last admission 5 PM) at approximately ₹169 return for adults including GST, and gives the clearest sense of the city's ridge topography.
