À propos de Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta Peak rises to 2,637 metres above sea level roughly 10 kilometres east of Udhagamandalam town, making it the highest point in Tamil Nadu and the summit of the entire Nilgiri range. The name combines two Kannada-Badaga words, dodda (big) and betta (hill), a literal description rather than a poetic one. The peak sits close to the point where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet, a geological position that gives its summit views an unusual range on a clear day, shola forest and tea-estate slopes falling away toward Kotagiri to the east, and the Mysore plateau visible to the northwest when haze permits. A short paved path from the upper car park leads to the Telescope House, a TNTDC-run pavilion housing two coin-operated telescopes.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 07:00 – 10:00. Before afternoon cloud cover typically builds over the summit.

Histoire de Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta's summit has carried its recorded name since at least the early nineteenth century, when the Nilgiris were first mapped as a hill-station site following John Sullivan's 1819 exploratory visit to the plateau. The peak's shola-grassland ecosystem, stunted, wind-sculpted evergreen forest confined to sheltered folds between open rolling grassland, is a vegetation type unique to the higher Western Ghats, and colonial-era botanists studied it intensively from stations near the summit since Doddabetta's elevation made it an obvious reference point for Nilgiri flora surveys. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation inaugurated the Telescope House at the summit on 18 June 1983, formalising what had until then been an informal viewpoint with no facilities beyond a car park. The Doddabetta Tea Factory, a separate commercial operation lower on the same access road, was established later to capture visitor traffic heading up to the peak, processing tea from surrounding estates using the standard CTC method rather than the more labour-intensive orthodox process used by some boutique Nilgiri producers.

Règles et étiquette à Doddabetta Peak

Entry to the summit viewpoint area costs approximately ₹30 for Indian visitors and around ₹150 for foreign nationals as of 2026, with a further small charge for the Telescope House itself and a separate still-camera fee of about ₹10; figures fluctuate by source and are worth confirming at the ticket window. The paved path to the Telescope House is short but steep in sections, and the summit's thin, cool air at 2,637 metres can catch out visitors who have come straight up from the plains without acclimatising, so a jacket is worth carrying even on an otherwise sunny day. Vehicles park in a designated lot below the final walking stretch; private cars cannot drive to the telescope pavilion itself. The forest department maintains a small buffer around the shola patches near the summit, and visitors are asked to keep to the marked path rather than cutting through the vegetation, both to protect the ecosystem and because the off-path terrain is uneven and occasionally slippery.

Conseils pour visiter Doddabetta Peak

  1. 1

Reaching Doddabetta before 10:00 is close to essential, since cloud and mist regularly roll in across the summit by late morning, especially during the July–September monsoon and on humid days even in the dry season; a visit timed for noon or later can mean paying the entry fee for a view of grey cloud rather than the Nilgiri panorama. The telescope views are of the surrounding landscape rather than the sky, useful for spotting distant peaks like Snowdon and the tea-estate patchwork around Kotagiri rather than for astronomy. Combining Doddabetta with the Tea Museum on the same road makes for an efficient half-day, since both sit on the same 10-kilometre stretch out of town and share the same access route. Auto-rickshaws from town charge a fixed return fare for the round trip including waiting time at the summit, which works out cheaper than paying a taxi to wait separately if travelling alone or in a small group.
