About Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta Peak rises to 2,637 metres above sea level roughly 10 kilometres east of Udhagamandalam town, making it the highest point in Tamil Nadu and the summit of the entire Nilgiri range. The name combines two Kannada-Badaga words, dodda (big) and betta (hill), a literal description rather than a poetic one. The peak sits close to the point where the Eastern and Western Ghats meet, a geological position that gives its summit views an unusual range on a clear day, shola forest and tea-estate slopes falling away toward Kotagiri to the east, and the Mysore plateau visible to the northwest when haze permits. A short paved path from the upper car park leads to the Telescope House, a TNTDC-run pavilion housing two coin-operated telescopes.

History of Doddabetta Peak

Doddabetta's summit has carried its recorded name since at least the early nineteenth century, when the Nilgiris were first mapped as a hill-station site following John Sullivan's 1819 exploratory visit to the plateau. The peak's shola-grassland ecosystem, stunted, wind-sculpted evergreen forest confined to sheltered folds between open rolling grassland, is a vegetation type unique to the higher Western Ghats, and colonial-era botanists studied it intensively from stations near the summit since Doddabetta's elevation made it an obvious reference point for Nilgiri flora surveys.
