À propos de Colosseum

The Colosseum charges €18 for the combined Colosseum–Forum–Palatine ticket and opens at 08:30 year-round, as of 2026. Built from travertine limestone quarried at Tivoli and bonded originally with iron clamps (later stripped for scrap metal in the medieval period, leaving the pockmarked holes visible today across its facade), the amphitheatre held an estimated 50,000–80,000 spectators across four tiers. The outer wall that survives is only about a third of the original circuit — the north side — because earthquakes in 847 and 1349 brought down the south face, and its fallen travertine blocks were hauled off for centuries to build Renaissance palazzi, including parts of St. Peter's Basilica. The hypogeum, the two-level underground network of corridors and animal cages beneath the arena floor, is now open on a separate timed ticket. Wooden lift mechanisms once raised scenery and caged animals directly into the arena through 80 vertical shafts, a system reconstructed by archaeologists from surviving postholes and Roman engineering treatises rather than intact original machinery.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 08:30–10:00. Straight at opening. The entry queue at the Piazza del Colosseo gate compounds fast after 10:00, and tour groups with pre-cleared access cut ahead of general-admission lines from mid-morning.

  • Busy
  • Very busy
  1. 08:30–10:00

    Morning OpeningBest time to go

First timed-entry groups file through security; queue is shortest of the day but still substantial due to combined-ticket holders arriving simultaneously.

    Moderate
  2. 10:00–13:00

    Tour Group Peak

Coach groups and cruise excursions converge; arena-level walkways become congested and photo spots at the north-facade viewpoint are contested.

    Very busy
  3. 13:00–16:00

    Midday Plateau

Crowds stay dense through the afternoon; heat is the bigger issue in summer since the arena floor and upper tiers offer little shade.

  4. 16:00–close

    Late Afternoon

Day-trip groups depart for dinner reservations; the last 90 minutes before closing are noticeably calmer, though upper-tier access may close earlier than ground level.

Histoire de Colosseum

Emperor Vespasian commissioned the Colosseum around 72 CE on the site of a drained lake in Nero's private Domus Aurea grounds, a deliberate political gesture returning confiscated land to public use. His son Titus inaugurated it in 80 CE with games reported by the historian Cassius Dio to have run for 100 days, though ancient casualty figures for gladiators and animals are widely regarded by modern historians as inflated or unverifiable rather than precise record.

Domitian added the hypogeum after 81 CE, mechanising the venue for animal hunts (venationes) and staged executions alongside gladiatorial combat. Organised gladiatorial games were formally ended by imperial decree in the early 5th century, and animal hunts continued into the 6th century before the building fell out of spectacle use entirely, later serving as a quarry, a fortress for the Frangipane family, and briefly a Christian shrine.

The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, the Italian Ministry of Culture body that now manages the site jointly with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, has run a continuous restoration and hypogeum-access programme since a major cleaning project completed in 2016.

Règles et étiquette à Colosseum

Security screening at the entrance is airport-style: bags larger than a small daypack are refused, and there is no on-site cloakroom, so plan accordingly. Large flat-bottomed suitcases, tripods, and selfie sticks over one metre are barred outright by posted signage at the gate.

Unauthorised vendors and costumed 'gladiators' cluster at Piazza del Colosseo and charge €10–€20 per photo despite having no official standing; ignore them rather than engage, since disputes over payment are common. Touts selling 'skip the line' tickets on the street are not affiliated with the Parco Archeologico and frequently overcharge for standard-price entry.

Climbing on ruins, removing stones, or touching restored surfaces is prohibited and enforced by on-site staff; fines for damaging protected monuments in Rome have been applied publicly to tourists in past years. Drones are banned across the whole archaeological area without a specific cultural-ministry permit.

Conseils pour visiter Colosseum

  1. 1

Buy the combined ticket online at colosseo.it and select the earliest available Colosseum entry slot — it fixes only your Colosseum window, while Forum and Palatine entry within the same 24 hours is flexible. Walking from the Colosseum to the Forum entrance on Via Sacra or Via della Salara Vecchia is more useful than doubling back to Colosseo metro station.

  2. 2

Water refill points sit near the exit, but there is minimal shade inside the monument itself in summer; carry water and a hat for the arena-level queue, which has no roof cover. The hypogeum and top-tier tours require advance booking, often two to three weeks out in high season (April–June, September–October), and cannot reliably be added on the same day.

  3. 3

For photographs of the exterior without paying admission, the Colle Oppio park to the north and the Arch of Constantine sightline directly south of the amphitheatre both give unobstructed, free views, and are considerably less congested than the immediate piazza.

FAQ — Colosseum

Does the Colosseum ticket include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill?

Yes. The standard €18 adult ticket is a combined pass covering the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, valid for 24 hours from the timed Colosseum entry slot, as of 2026. Only the Colosseum portion requires a fixed time; Forum and Palatine entry within that window is flexible.

Is the Colosseum free on the first Sunday of the month?

Yes. Free general admission applies on the first Sunday of every month, alongside 25 April, 2 June, and 4 November, but these dates carry no time-slot cap and draw significantly longer queues than a paid ticket day.

Do I need a separate ticket to see the underground hypogeum?

Yes. Hypogeum and arena-floor access is sold as a guided-tour add-on, typically €9–€16 above the base combo ticket, and must be booked in advance since spaces are limited and fill up weeks ahead in high season.

What is closed to visitors on Mondays or holidays at the Colosseum?

No, the Colosseum has no weekly closing day; it opens daily including Mondays. The only closures are 25 December and 1 January, unlike some Vatican sites that close on Sundays.
