798 Art Zone began as Joint Factory 718, a Sino-German electronics plant whose ground was broken in April 1954. East German architects chose the Bauhaus-influenced saw-tooth design, and the factory began production in 1957 as part of the cooperation between the People's Republic and the German Democratic Republic. The UCCA Center for Contemporary Art opened in the district in 2007, and 798 grew into one of Beijing's most visited cultural destinations.
