About Dubrovnik-Neretva County

Dubrovnik-Neretva County (Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija) is the southernmost county of Croatia, running from the Neretva river delta in the north-west to the Prevlaka peninsula at the Montenegrin border, with its administrative seat in Dubrovnik. The county is a narrow coastal strip backed by karst limestone mountains, and includes the Pelješac peninsula, the islands of Korčula, Mljet, Lastovo and the Elafiti group, and the Konavle valley south of Dubrovnik. The Bosnian coastal town of Neum interrupts the mainland coast, which is why the Pelješac Bridge, opened in 2022, is the link that connects the southern coast to the rest of Croatia without crossing a border.

The climate is Mediterranean, with hot dry summers, mild winters and peak crowds in July and August. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) at Čilipi is the main gateway, and ferries from Gruž harbour serve the Elafiti Islands, Mljet and the Pelješac peninsula. May, June, September and October offer warm swimming water and fewer cruise passengers; the wine and oyster country of Pelješac and Ston is at its best in the shoulder months, and many small island businesses close from November to March. The county is also a base for day trips into Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro.
