Über Petřín Hill and Lookout Tower
Petřín Tower charges CZK 250 for adults, as of 2026, and reaches its viewing gallery after 299 steps or by a CZK 150 lift surcharge. The tower is a steel lattice structure about 58.7 metres tall, built in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition and modelled on the Eiffel Tower, standing on a hill that rises about 327 metres above sea level. Petřín Hill's gardens are free and stretch across a wooded ridge above Malá Strana with orchards, a rose garden, a mirror maze and the Štefánik Observatory. The gallery views take in the castle, the Vltava river bends and, on clear days, the hills beyond the city.
Beste Tageszeit: Late afternoon in clear weather. About 90 minutes before sunset, when light on the castle and river is warmest and the tower queue has shortened.

Geschichte von Petřín Hill and Lookout Tower
Petřín Hill carried vineyards in the Middle Ages, and the Hunger Wall that climbs the slope was built around 1360 to 1362 under Charles IV as part of the New Town fortifications. Tradition says the wall was a make-work project for the poor in a hungry year; that origin is folk tradition rather than proven fact. The Club of Czech Tourists built the tower and a funicular for the 1891 Jubilee Exhibition, and the Mirror Maze of the same year houses a diorama of the 1648 defence of Charles Bridge against Swedish troops.
Petřín Hill's funicular, 509 metres long with a 126-metre rise and three stops, was damaged by extreme rain in September 2024 and closed for track reconstruction and new cars with about 120 passenger capacity. The Prague Public Transit Company announced service resuming on 22 September 2026 at 07:00, with earlier press reports of a higher CZK 100 single fare; verify before relying on it. Sources also disagree on tower height, giving 58.7 metres (Prague City Tourism) or 63.5 metres (some guides).
Regeln & Etikette in Petřín Hill and Lookout Tower
Petřín Tower has 299 steps to the gallery with no shortcut for those who dislike heights, and the CZK 150 lift surcharge is the only alternative, as of 2026. Wheelchair access is limited, so ask at the ticket desk before committing. Buy the ticket at the tower entrance rather than from resellers, who add a margin.
Petřín Hill's gardens allow walking, picnics and cycling on marked paths, but open fires are not allowed, and the rose garden and orchards ask visitors to stay on the paths. Be wary of kiosks near the funicular station charging inflated prices for snacks and drinks. Pickpocketing is less frequent than in the Old Town but does occur on the crowded funicular, so keep bags zipped.
Tipps für den Besuch von Petřín Hill and Lookout Tower
- 1
Petřín Hill is best approached by walking up from the Újezd tram stop through the gardens, a climb of about 20 to 30 minutes on shaded paths, then taking the funicular down once it reopens on 22 September 2026. The funicular is not covered by the 30- or 90-minute Prague tickets, so check the fare or use a 24-hour ticket at CZK 140 on the app, which the transport company says includes it.
- 2
Petřín Tower's gallery is most rewarding an hour before sunset, when light rakes across the castle and the Old Town spires. Combine the visit with the Strahov Monastery library, a short walk north along the ridge, and follow the Hunger Wall stretch near the Újezd end for a view over Malá Strana. Wear proper shoes: the paths are steep and slick after rain.
