Geschichte von Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square was laid out by Charles IV in 1348 as part of the New Town and originally served as the Horse Market, and it was renamed after St Wenceslas in 1848. Myslbek's statue was erected between 1912 and 1913, replacing earlier Baroque figures by Jan Jiří Bendl, and the neo-Renaissance National Museum was built at the top between 1885 and 1891.
Wenceslas Square became a place of protest in the 20th century. In January 1969 the students Jan Palach and Jan Zajíc set themselves on fire there to protest the Warsaw Pact invasion, and a bronze memorial cross in the pavement in front of the museum marks Palach's act. In November 1989 crowds of up to about 250,000 gathered on the square during the Velvet Revolution that ended one-party rule.
Regeln & Etikette in Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square is a public street, so there is no dress code or ticketed entry, though at the Palach memorial in front of the National Museum visitors are expected to keep quiet and not stand on the cross.
Wenceslas Square is a known area for pickpockets and for tourist traps. Currency-exchange booths advertising zero commission often apply poor rates, so use a bank ATM and decline dynamic currency conversion. Touts near the lower end invite visitors to bars and clubs where drinks are overpriced; check prices on the menu before sitting down. Tipping in restaurants is customary at around 10 percent. Street food stalls on the square charge two to three times side-street prices.
Tipps für den Besuch von Wenceslas Square
- 1
Wenceslas Square is best walked uphill from Můstek to the National Museum, so the statue and museum are ahead of you the whole way. Start early at 09:00, take a break at the Palach memorial and follow it with a visit to the National Museum, which was reopened in 2018 after a long renovation.
- 2
Wenceslas Square rewards a look up at the upper storeys, where Art Nouveau facades survive above the shop fronts. Allow about 45 minutes for the full 750-metre walk with stops at the statue and the memorial. Food on the square itself is average, so walk one street off to Jindřišská or Vodičkova for a local lunch. The metro at Muzeum connects directly to the main station.
