Sobre Prague
Prague is both the capital of the Czech Republic and one of the country's regions, administered as a single city of about 496 square kilometres straddling the Vltava river. Its historic centre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992 and includes the castle district of Hradčany, the Baroque quarter of Malá Strana, the medieval Old Town (Staré Město), the former Jewish quarter of Josefov and the 14th-century New Town (Nové Město). The city lay outside the worst fighting of the Second World War, so its street plan and many buildings survived, though the 1945 Prague Uprising burned parts of the Old Town Hall.
The region works best on foot combined with the metro (lines A, B and C), trams and buses run under the PID ticket system, with a 30-minute ticket at CZK 39 and a 90-minute ticket at CZK 50 on paper, as of 2026. Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) is about 17 kilometres west of the centre, and Hlavní nádraží is the main rail hub for services to Berlin, Vienna and regional day trips.
April-June and September-October give mild weather and fewer crowds than July-August, when queues at Prague Castle and Charles Bridge peak. December brings Christmas markets and near-freezing temperatures, and January and February are the quietest months. Prices are quoted in Czech koruna (CZK), not euros.
