Kutná Hora (Sedlec Ossuary and St Barbara's Church)
A silver-mining town east of Prague, its centre and the Gothic St Barbara's Church listed by UNESCO in 1995, plus the Sedlec Ossuary chapel decorated with human bones.
170 km · 2h30 by car; about 3h by direct bus
Český Krumlov
A small South Bohemian town inside a tight bend of the Vltava, its castle complex and historic centre on the UNESCO list since 1992; a long day trip, better as an overnight.
À propos de Prague
The main sights fall into districts on two banks: Hradčany and Malá Strana on the western bank below and around Prague Castle, and the Old Town, Josefov and the New Town on the eastern bank, joined by Charles Bridge, begun in 1357. The castle complex, one of the largest in the world, is the natural first stop, and a walk downhill through Malá Strana to Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square links most of the headline sights in a long day.
Public transport is cheap and simple. Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG), about 17 kilometres from the centre, connects by bus 119 to metro line A at Nádraží Veleslavín, and metro lines A, B and C, trams and buses share PID tickets: 30 minutes for CZK 39 and 90 minutes for CZK 50 on paper, or CZK 36 and CZK 46 in the app, as of 2026. Hlavní nádraží, the main station, has direct trains to Berlin, Vienna and Kutná Hora and connects to the metro at Muzeum.
April-June and September-October offer the best weather and the shortest queues outside the peak of summer, while July and August are hottest and busiest, with heavy crowds at Prague Castle and on Charles Bridge. December has Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, and cold weather. Prices are in Czech koruna (CZK). Several sites close on set days: the Jewish Museum closes on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, and the Petřín funicular is due to reopen on 22 September 2026.
