Top 10 des lieux à visiter à Madurai

Madurai is one of the few Indian cities that doesn't need the qualifier 'ancient' attached to it like a tourist-board sticker — it simply is ancient, in the way that a river is wet.

  • 90 km · 2 hours

    Chettinad (Karaikudi and villages)

A cluster of villages built on 19th-century mercantile wealth from Southeast Asian trade, Chettinad is known for palatial mansions faced in Athangudi handmade tiles, elaborately carved teak doorways, and a distinctly fiery regional cuisine built on roasted spice masalas unlike anything else in Tamil Nadu.

  • 120 km · 3 hours

    Kodaikanal

A hill station at 2,133 metres on the Palani Hills, Kodaikanal's lake, shola forests, and dramatically cool air (15–20°C in winter) offer total tonal contrast to the dry heat of Madurai. The ghat road up from Madurai is steep and winding; shared jeeps from Kodai Road station are the most practical option.

  • 173 km · 3 hours 30 minutes

    Rameswaram

The Ramanathaswamy Temple here contains the longest temple corridor in India — 1,212 metres of granite columns — and the town sits on Pamban Island, connected to the mainland by the dramatic Pamban Bridge. The train journey across the bridge is one of India's great rail experiences.

À propos de Madurai

Continuously inhabited for over 2,500 years, it is among the oldest living cities in the world, and its antiquity is architectural, spiritual, and commercial in equal measure. The city is organised, spiritually and literally, around the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple complex, whose twelve gopurams — pyramidal gateway towers sheathed in thousands of painted lime-plaster figures — function as the city's true skyline. Everything else in Madurai orients itself around this axis. The Vaigai River runs through the southern edge of the city, though it has been significantly tamed by dams upstream; its banks are best explored in the early morning when washermen and worshippers use the ghats in parallel. The city's commercial energy is concentrated around the temple's four cardinal corridors — Chitrai Street, Avanimoola Street, and the covered flower market on West Veli Street, where vendors thread jasmine garlands by the kilogram in the pre-dawn dark. Madurai's food culture is distinguished by its jigarthanda — a cold drink combining almond gum, nannari syrup, milk ice cream, and rose milk — and its distinctive mutton dishes from the Pandyan tradition. The climate is dry and warm for most of the year; October through February offers the most comfortable conditions for extended sightseeing. The main Madurai Junction railway station connects to Chennai (approximately seven hours by express), and the Madurai Airport receives direct flights from several Indian metros and Colombo. Auto-rickshaws in Madurai operate largely without meters; ₹50–₹100 per short hop within the city centre is the prevailing norm, though drivers will often quote double for tourists.
