Pazhamudircholai is the last and least accessible of the Arupadai Veedu sites near Madurai, set into dense shola forest roughly 11 kilometres beyond Alagar Kovil along a narrowing, increasingly steep hill road. Unlike the built gopuram-and-courtyard temples of the plains, the shrine here is modest and partly built into a natural rock formation, its comparatively unadorned architecture a direct consequence of its forest setting rather than any lesser devotional status — Pazhamudircholai ranks equally among the six abodes of Murugan in Tamil Shaivite tradition alongside far grander structures like Thiruparankundram. The surrounding shola forest, a distinct high-altitude evergreen ecosystem found only in patches across the Western Ghats and their eastern spurs, supports a resident troop of bonnet macaques that has grown accustomed to pilgrim traffic and can be assertive around visitors carrying food or prasadam.

Best time of day: 07:00–09:00. For cooler forest air on the ascent and the best chance of an active waterfall in season; avoid midday given the exposed final stretch of the approach road.
