Day trips from Amman

Worth a day out if you have one to spare, nearest first.

  • 40 km · 45-60m

    Madaba and Mount Nebo

Byzantine mosaics, including the 6th-century Madaba Map at St George's Church, and the Franciscan Memorial of Moses with a viewpoint over the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea; a half-day trip.

  • 48 km · 60-75m

    Jerash (Gerasa)

One of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the Middle East, with Hadrian's Arch, the Oval Plaza and a colonnaded street; a standard half-day to full-day trip, easily done by minibus from Amman's North Station.

  • 60 km · 60-75m

    Dead Sea (Amman Beach, Sweimeh)

Float on the lowest dry land on Earth, about 430 metres below sea level, and use a public beach or resort day pass; a relaxed half-day trip that combines well with Mount Nebo and Madaba.

  • 235 km · 3h-3h30m each way

    Petra (long day; overnight recommended)

The Nabataean rock-cut city is 3-4 hours south of Amman each way, so a same-day visit is possible only as a very long day with an early start; an overnight stay at Wadi Musa is strongly advised. Petra is covered by the Jordan Pass.

  • 320 km · 4h-4h30m each way

    Wadi Rum (overnight only)

A sandstone desert with jeep and camp stays, four hours or more south of Amman, so it is best paired with Petra on a two- or three-night trip rather than a day trip.

About Amman

The city occupies the site of the Iron Age capital Rabbath-Ammon and the Roman city of Philadelphia, and it became the capital of the Emirate of Transjordan in the early 1920s; the older districts of Downtown (Al-Balad), Jabal Amman (Rainbow Street) and Jabal al-Weibdeh sit on steep streets with stepped lanes, so a taxi or ride-hailing app is the practical way to move between them. Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), about 35 kilometres south of the centre, connects to the city by Airport Express bus (reported at around JOD 3.3-3.4) and fixed-price taxi (around JOD 22.50 at the last confirmed rate); Amman has no metro or passenger rail, and public transport is limited to buses and the Amman BRT.

The city's walkable core takes two days: Amman Citadel, the Roman Theatre and Downtown on the first, and the Jordan Museum, King Abdullah I Mosque and Rainbow Street on the second. Jerash, Madaba, Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea are all half-day or full-day trips, and Petra (about 235 kilometres, three to four hours by road each way) and Wadi Rum (about 320 kilometres, four hours or more) are better as overnight trips than as single-day excursions from Amman. The Jordan Pass covers most of the major sites, but not St George's Church in Madaba or the Dead Sea beaches.

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months: summer days often exceed 30 degrees Celsius, and winter nights are cold, with occasional snow. Friday morning is quiet, and Ramadan changes opening hours and eating habits across the city.
