About Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur

The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is an administrative territory of about 243 square kilometres, separated from Selangor on 1 February 1974 and governed by the federal government through City Hall Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) rather than by a state. Around 2.1 million people live in the city proper, inside a Greater Kuala Lumpur area of roughly 8.8 million, and the territory is entirely surrounded by the state of Selangor. Putrajaya, a separate federal territory to the south, has housed most federal ministries since the late 1990s, while Kuala Lumpur remains the national capital.

The territory sits at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, whose muddy junction gave the city its name, and its climate is equatorial, with daily highs of 32-35 degrees Celsius, high humidity and about 2,600 millimetres of rain a year. The wettest months tend to fall between October and March, with January-February and June-July relatively drier and better for walking outdoors. The city is served by the LRT, MRT, monorail, KTM Komuter trains and the KLIA Ekspres airport link, all meeting at or near KL Sentral. Most visitors base themselves in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and Bukit Bintang area, and the region's attractions extend to the Lake Gardens, Chinatown and the limestone hills of Batu Caves just beyond the city boundary.
