8 Places to Visit in Zurich
Also known as Zürich
Zurich sits at the northern tip of the Zürichsee, where the Limmat river drains the lake toward the Rhine, and functions as Switzerland's largest city and financial capital despite Bern holding the national capital title. The city's Altstadt splits along the river into two halves — the west bank around Lindenhof hill and St.

About Zurich
Peter's church, and the east bank's Niederdorf district — with Bahnhofstrasse running a straight line from the main station to the lake pier at Bürkliplatz, tracing the route of the medieval city walls demolished in 1864. Zürich HB, the country's busiest railway station, anchors the transport network: direct trains reach Lucerne in under an hour, Geneva in under three, and Zürich Airport in roughly 10–12 minutes, making the city a practical single base for exploring much of German-speaking Switzerland.
The city's history runs from a Roman customs post named Turicum on Lindenhof hill, through a Carolingian and Ottonian royal residence, to a self-governing guild-run medieval city after the 1336 constitution, and finally to the base from which Huldrych Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation from Grossmünster's pulpit in the 1520s. That Reformation history explains much of the Altstadt's architectural character today: the city's major churches were stripped of medieval ornamentation in the 16th century, later replaced in the 20th century by significant stained-glass commissions from Marc Chagall, Augusto Giacometti, and Sigmar Polke rather than restored medieval decoration.
Zürich's museums and galleries — the Swiss National Museum directly behind the station, Kunsthaus Zürich near the theatre district, and a lakeside zoo with an award-winning rainforest hall — sit within a compact area easily covered by the city's tram network. The most reliable travel window is May through September for lake activities, outdoor dining, and the mountain viewpoint at Uetliberg, while December brings Christmas markets to the Altstadt squares and a quieter, mistier lakefront; winters are cold but rarely severe by Alpine standards, since the lake basin moderates the climate compared with higher-altitude cantons.
