The name Udhagamandalam, now the official Tamil form, derives from the Toda settlement that predated colonial arrival; the Toda, Kota, Badaga, and Kurumba communities lived across these grasslands and shola forests long before Sullivan built Stone House in 1822 and dammed a stream to create Ooty Lake two years later. The town's layout still traces its colonial origins: the lake and racecourse anchor the centre, Charing Cross and the Collector's office mark the old civil station, and roads radiate out toward the tea and cinchona estates that financed the settlement's growth through the nineteenth century. Ooty today functions as the administrative headquarters of the Nilgiris district and the terminus of the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway, whose metre-gauge line still connects the town to Coonoor and, via a change of locomotive, down the rack section to Mettupalayam on the plains. The nearest airport is Coimbatore, roughly 88 kilometres away over a winding ghat road that takes 3.5 to 4 hours by car; the most atmospheric approach, however, remains the toy train itself. October through March brings the most reliable weather for sightseeing, with clear mornings and cool but manageable daytime temperatures, while the June–September southwest monsoon brings heavy, prolonged rain that can disrupt both road travel and the mountain railway's rack section. April and May, the Indian summer holiday season, bring the heaviest domestic tourist crowds despite Ooty's own climate barely varying enough to justify the term hill-station escape by the numbers alone.
