Sobre Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge spans the Vltava for 515.76 metres, is 9.5 metres wide, and is free to walk at any hour, as of 2026. The stone footway runs across 16 arches between the Old Town and Malá Strana, guarded at each end by Gothic bridge towers. Thirty statues and sculptural groups line the balustrades, most carved between 1706 and 1714. Charles Bridge is the busiest pedestrian route in Prague, and by mid-morning in summer movement across it slows to a shuffle behind portrait painters, brass bands and souvenir stalls.

Mejor momento del día: 06:00 - 07:30. In summer, when the bridge is nearly empty and low sun lights the Gothic towers and the Vltava.

Historia de Charles Bridge

Charles IV laid the foundation stone of Charles Bridge on 9 July 1357, and Peter Parler's workshop built it in sandstone blocks as the successor to the Judith Bridge, which floods destroyed in 1342. The Old Town Bridge Tower, decorated in the 1370s, is regarded as one of the most important works of European Gothic secular architecture. The oldest surviving statue is St John of Nepomuk, cast in bronze in 1683; the last addition was the group of Saints Cyril and Methodius in 1928.

Charles Bridge remained the only fixed crossing of the Vltava in Prague until 1841. Many statues on the balustrade today are copies, with weathered originals kept in the Lapidarium of the National Museum and in the Vyšehrad casemates. Tradition says the foundation date was chosen for numerical symmetry (1357, 9 July, 5:31), a story usually told as popular legend rather than confirmed fact, as is the tale that egg yolk was added to the mortar.

Normas y etiqueta en Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge is pedestrian-only, and cyclists, e-scooters and vehicles are not permitted on the deck. Street performers, portrait artists and stalls occupy set positions, and photographing them usually leads to a request for a tip. Do not stop mid-stream to pose; the bridge narrows at the statues and blocks the flow.

Charles Bridge is one of the most pickpocket-prone places in Prague, with crews working the crowded middle stretch and the tower gates. Keep phones out of rear pockets and bags zipped to the front. Touching the bronze plaque of St John of Nepomuk for luck has polished it bright, but do not lean on or climb the balustrade or statues, which are protected heritage. Tipping in nearby restaurants is customary at about 10 percent, and menus on the Old Town side often add a cover charge, so read the bill.

Consejos para visitar Charles Bridge

  1. 1

Charles Bridge is best crossed twice: at 06:00 to 07:30 for the empty version, and after 21:00 when the crowds thin and the towers are floodlit. Walking from the Old Town Bridge Tower toward Malá Strana puts Prague Castle ahead of you, the natural framing for photographs.

  2. 2

Climb the Old Town Bridge Tower, 138 steps to a gallery about 47 metres up, for a view along the bridge and across to the castle; the ticket costs CZK 250, as of 2026, and the first hour after opening is half price. Avoid riverside restaurants on the Kampa side that quote tourist-only set menus, and walk two streets inland for a normal lunch.
