Sobre Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

The Prague Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall performs its figure show every hour from 08:00 to 23:00, and watching it from Old Town Square is free, as of 2026. The tower visitor route with the gallery costs CZK 350 for adults and offers a view over the red roofs of the Old Town. The clock's first version dates from 1410, which makes it among the oldest astronomical clocks still working, and its dial combines a zodiac ring, a sun and moon pointer and a calendar disc. On the hour, a skeleton tolls a bell, the twelve apostles pass through two small windows, and a rooster crows to end the show.

Mejor momento del día: 09:00 - 10:00. On the hour, when the square is calmer and the first hour of tower entry is half price.

Historia de Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

Old Town Hall was founded in 1338 when the Old Town councillors bought a patrician house on the square, and the tower was completed in 1364. The first clock was completed in 1410 by the clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň and the astronomer Jan Šindel, and the clockmaker Jan Růže, called Hanuš, improved its mechanism around 1490. A well-known story says the town blinded Master Hanuš so he could never build a rival clock; this is a legend with no reliable historical support.

Old Town Hall was the centre of the Prague Uprising in May 1945, when fire destroyed its neo-Renaissance wings, and only the tower and the adjoining torso survive. The clock was repaired in 1948 and restored again in 2005. Old Town Square itself carries a memorial of 27 white crosses set in the paving for the Protestant leaders executed there on 21 June 1621 after the defeat at White Mountain.

Normas y etiqueta en Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

Old Town Hall runs its visitor route up the tower by ramp, with a glass lift as an option; the walk up is gentle, but the gallery is narrow and busy at midday. Tripods on the gallery are impractical because of the crowd.

Old Town Square is one of the main pickpocket zones of Prague, particularly in the crush during the hourly show. Restaurants on the square itself typically charge two to three times the price of a side street for a beer or a main course, and the trdelník stands charge tourist prices for a pastry commonly described as not a traditional Czech dish. Currency-exchange booths advertising zero commission often apply poor rates; use a bank ATM and decline dynamic currency conversion. Tipping is customary at about 10 percent in restaurants.

Consejos para visitar Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

  1. 1

Old Town Hall's show is best watched from the front of the crowd at about 10 minutes before the hour, since the crowd deepens quickly; look at the sun pointer and the moving figures rather than filming the whole show. The show lasts less than a minute, so many visitors are surprised by how short it is.

  2. 2

Old Town Hall's tower is best entered in the first hour after opening, when tickets are half price and the queue is short. Time the ascent so you are on the gallery just before the hour for a view over the square. The Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Jan Hus Memorial stand on the same square, so a loop of 45 minutes covers the main sights on foot without a ticket.
