Sobre Matthias Church

Matthias Church charges HUF 3,400 for adult entry to the nave and HUF 4,000 for the tower, as of 2026. The Gothic parish church of Buda Castle carries a diamond-patterned Zsolnay ceramic roof in green, orange and blue, and its 80-metre tower is one of the few medieval structures in the Castle District to survive intact. Inside, the walls are painted with stencilled patterns and murals in red, gold and blue, and the light through stained glass gives the nave a warmer tone than most Hungarian churches. Matthias Church is officially the Church of Our Lady of Buda, and the popular name comes from King Matthias Corvinus, who ordered the south-west tower rebuilt in 1470.

Mejor momento del día: 09:00-10:00. Opening hour, before the Castle Hill tour groups arrive, and the painted walls read best in low light.

Historia de Matthias Church

Matthias Church dates in its present form to the second half of the 14th century, in late Gothic style, though a Romanesque predecessor is claimed on the site and evidence for it is sparse. The south-west bell tower was rebuilt in 1470 under King Matthias Corvinus, who is said to have married here, and this tower is one of the finest Gothic elements surviving in Hungary.

After the Ottomans took Buda in 1541, Matthias Church became a mosque for 145 years, until the city was retaken in 1686 and the interior was baroquised. The architect Frigyes Schulek reconstructed the church between 1874 and 1896, restoring its medieval character with neo-Gothic additions such as the Zsolnay roof tiles and the carved stonework. Two Hungarian monarchs were crowned here: Franz Joseph in 1867, with the first performance of Liszt's Coronation Mass, and Charles IV on 30 December 1916. The murals in the nave are a late-19th-century decorative scheme in keeping with Schulek's reconstruction, and the pulpit dates from 1890-1893.

Normas y etiqueta en Matthias Church

Matthias Church enforces a written dress code: women need skirts or trousers to the knee or below and tops covering shoulders and cleavage, or a shawl, and men need knee-length shorts or longer and a shirt with sleeves. The visitor rules state that people in improper attire are denied entry, and costumes and wedding clothing are prohibited.

Matthias Church permits photography and filming only with a written request and contract signed by both parties, according to the church's visitor rules, so email the trusteeship in advance for professional work and ask at the desk about personal photographs. Smoking is banned inside and within 5 metres of the entrances, tickets are non-refundable, and certified guide dogs enter free. Liturgical services take priority, and the Trusteeship can change entry times without notice.

Consejos para visitar Matthias Church

  1. 1

Matthias Church tickets are sold on the church's own website, and buying online avoids a queue at the door in peak season. The tower visit is a 10-minute guided slot, so buy the tower ticket first if you want a specific time, and check the weather because the tower closes in wind and storms.

  2. 2

Matthias Church pairs with Fisherman's Bastion directly beside it, which is ticketed separately. The audioguide is available through QR codes and its first three chapters are free, which is enough for a short visit if the HUF 1,600 add-on is not worth it. The square outside, Szentháromság tér, has cafes that charge a premium, so eat lower down the hill; the Trinity Column in the square is a plague memorial from the early 18th century. Concerts and organ recitals are held in the nave and are listed on the church website, and a ticketed evening concert is an alternative way to see the interior without the daytime queues.
