À propos de Jewish Quarter (Josefov) and Jewish Museum in Prague
The Jewish Museum in Prague sells one Prague Jewish Town ticket at CZK 600 for adults, as of 2026, covering the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Spanish, Maisel and Pinkas synagogues. Josefov is the smallest district of Prague and the site of one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe. The ticket is valid for three opening days, and a full tour takes 2 to 3 hours according to the museum. The Old-New Synagogue, a Gothic building from the late 13th century, is not covered and has its own ticket. Six synagogues, the cemetery and the town hall survived the clearance of the ghetto in the 1890s and 1900s, and the museum now uses them as exhibition space.
Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00 - 10:00. On a weekday, before the Old Jewish Cemetery path fills with tour groups.

Histoire de Jewish Quarter (Josefov) and Jewish Museum in Prague
Josefov's Jewish community is thought to have settled in Prague as early as the 10th century, and in 1262 Přemysl Otakar II granted it self-government through the Statuta Judaeorum. Mordecai Maisel, mayor and financier under Rudolf II, funded much of the 16th-century rebuilding, and the quarter was renamed Josefstadt in 1850 after Joseph II, whose 1782 edict eased restrictions. Between 1893 and 1913 most of the district was demolished in a Paris-style modernisation, leaving six synagogues, the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Jewish Town Hall.
The Old Jewish Cemetery was used from the 15th century until 1787 and holds an estimated 12,000 visible gravestones stacked in layers of burials, with the grave of Rabbi Judah Loew (died 1609), around whom the Golem legend gathered. The Golem story is folklore, not history. The Pinkas Synagogue walls carry the handwritten names of 77,297 Czech and Moravian Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
Règles et étiquette à Jewish Quarter (Josefov) and Jewish Museum in Prague
The Jewish Museum in Prague closes every Saturday and on Jewish holidays, so check the calendar before planning; the Old-New Synagogue closes earlier, usually an hour before Shabbat begins on Friday. Modest dress is expected in synagogues, men are asked to cover their heads in the Old-New Synagogue, and quiet is required in the Pinkas Synagogue. Follow posted photography rules, which vary by venue; flash is not appropriate in the halls.
The Old Jewish Cemetery keeps visitors on a marked path: do not step on graves or lean on the stones, which are fragile sandstone and marble. Leaving a small pebble on a grave is a Jewish custom, while paper notes are pushed into the tomb of Rabbi Loew. Tickets are non-refundable. Nearby restaurants on Pařížská Street price for luxury shoppers, and tipping at about 10 percent is customary.
Conseils pour visiter Jewish Quarter (Josefov) and Jewish Museum in Prague
- 1
The Jewish Museum in Prague is best visited on a weekday morning from 09:00, since the Old Jewish Cemetery path is a one-way loop that backs up when groups arrive. Buy the ticket online or at the Information and Reservation Centre on U Staré školy to avoid queuing at individual synagogues, and note the ticket stays valid for three opening days, so the visit can be split.
- 2
Josefov's Old-New Synagogue needs a separate ticket from the Prague Jewish Community, and it is worth adding: it is usually described as the oldest active synagogue in Europe, dating from about 1270. The cemetery and synagogues cluster within 300 metres, and Franz Kafka's birthplace stands on the edge of the quarter. Pickpockets work the queues around Pařížská Street and Old Town Square, so keep bags in front.
