À propos de Lennon Wall

The Lennon Wall on Velkopřevorské náměstí in Malá Strana is free to view at any hour, as of 2026. The garden wall of the Grand Priory of the Order of Malta is covered in layers of paint, lyrics and portraits of John Lennon, and it stands beside the Čertovka canal a short walk from Charles Bridge. The wall began as a local memorial after Lennon's murder in December 1980 and turned into a symbol of youth dissent under the communist regime. Today the wall is a small, crowded photo stop that changes with each layer of paint.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Early morning. Before 09:00, when the wall is empty and the paint is easy to photograph without crowds.

Histoire de Lennon Wall

The Lennon Wall started in the early 1980s after John Lennon's death in 1980, when an unknown artist painted his portrait and lyrics on the wall, and young Czechs began adding peace messages and grievances against the communist regime. Police whitewashed the wall repeatedly, and students returned to repaint it in the running battle that lasted until the Velvet Revolution of November 1989. The dissident movement around it was nicknamed Lennonism.

The Lennon Wall was painted white overnight on 17 November 2014, the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, by art students who left only the black words 'wall is over', and the Knights of Malta first filed and then withdrew a vandalism complaint. After a 2019 reconstruction the wall was recognised as a memorial and open-air gallery, with professional murals and designated zones for visitors' own messages.

Règles et étiquette à Lennon Wall

The Lennon Wall bans spray painting and permanent paint. Pens, chalk and other non-permanent materials are allowed only in the designated white zones, and stickers and posters are prohibited. Busking and begging on the square are banned.

The Lennon Wall's small square is hemmed by a canal, a church and private property, so blocking the street for photographs annoys residents and the neighbouring Grand Priory Palace. Pickpockets are active in the crush around the wall and on the nearby Charles Bridge approach. Nearby cafés on Kampa charge tourist prices for coffee, and tipping at about 10 percent is customary.

Conseils pour visiter Lennon Wall

  1. 1

The Lennon Wall is best visited before 09:00 or after dusk, when the small square is empty and the colours photograph cleanly. Reach it on foot from Charles Bridge in about 10 minutes via Kampa island, or by tram to Hellichova, and combine it with a walk along the Čertovka canal to the water wheel and Kampa Park.

  2. 2

Lennon Wall is small, so allow only 15 to 20 minutes and do not plan a whole excursion around it. The messages change often, so look for layers from different years and read the anti-regime slogans that survive at the edges. If you want to add your own message, bring a chalk stick or pen and use only the designated white panels, as of the current rules; check the signs on the wall for the latest permitted zones.
