À propos de St Vitus Cathedral

St Vitus Cathedral is included in the CZK 450 Prague Castle basic ticket, as of 2026, and measures about 124 metres long and 60 metres wide. The Gothic cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and the largest church in the Czech Republic, its main tower rising about 100 metres over the Third Courtyard. Its interior of pale sandstone climbs into net vaults with a zigzag pattern of ribs, and it contains the tomb of St Wenceslas and the Crown Chamber that holds the Bohemian coronation jewels. The stained glass ranges from 14th-century window tracery to Art Nouveau panels by Alfons Mucha and a rose window by František Kysela.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00 - 09:30. At opening, before groups fill the nave and the Wenceslas Chapel.

Histoire de St Vitus Cathedral

St Vitus Cathedral was begun in 1344, when Prague became an archbishopric under Charles IV, and Matthias of Arras laid out a triple-aisled French Gothic plan with flying buttresses. Peter Parler took over in the 1350s and introduced the distinctive net vaults, and the St Wenceslas Chapel, built between 1356 and 1364, is decorated with over 1,300 semi-precious stones and wall paintings.

St Vitus Cathedral stood unfinished for centuries after the Hussite Wars stopped construction in the 15th century, and the western nave and towers were only built in the 19th and 20th centuries in a neo-Gothic style, with the whole completed in 1929 for the millennium of St Wenceslas. The seven-locked door to the Crown Chamber opens only rarely, when the crown jewels are shown. The cathedral remains state property as part of Prague Castle, though it functions as the seat of the archbishop.

Règles et étiquette à St Vitus Cathedral

St Vitus Cathedral is an active church, so cover shoulders and knees, remove hats and speak quietly. Mass and services close parts of the building to sightseeing, and the Wenceslas Chapel is viewed from the entrance rather than entered. Flash photography is disruptive to worshippers and usually not allowed, and tripods are not practical in the nave.

St Vitus Cathedral sits inside the Prague Castle security perimeter, so bags are screened before you reach the Third Courtyard and the queue runs longest between 10:00 and 14:00 in summer. The tower deck requires climbing close to 300 narrow stone steps, with no lift. People with heart or knee trouble should skip it. Keep pockets zipped in the queue, where pickpockets work.

Conseils pour visiter St Vitus Cathedral

  1. 1

St Vitus Cathedral is best entered at opening at 09:00, when the nave is quiet and the light through the stained glass is strongest on the eastern side. Start at the west door, walk the south aisle to the Wenceslas Chapel, then cross to the Mucha window in the north aisle.

  2. 2

St Vitus Cathedral's south façade carries the 14th-century Golden Gate, a mosaic of the Last Judgment that is best seen from the Third Courtyard in the afternoon light. Combine the visit with the Old Royal Palace and St George's Basilica on the same ticket rather than returning, since the two-day validity allows one entry per building. If you climb the tower, buy the CZK 200 ticket separately and go early, when the steps are less crowded.
