Shimla sits at an average elevation of 2,205 metres along a forested ridge line in the lower Himalaya, and it served as the summer capital of British India from 1864 until 1947, a role that shaped nearly every colonial-era building still standing along the Ridge and Mall Road today.

À propos de Shimla

The town spreads across seven original hills - among them Jakhoo, Summer Hill, Elysium Hill, and Observatory Hill - connected by a layout of narrow, largely pedestrian lanes rather than a conventional street grid, since almost no ground in central Shimla is genuinely flat. Cart Road, running below the Ridge, carries most vehicle traffic and links to the town's two transport hubs: Shimla Railway Station, the upper terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla line inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and the ISBT Tutikandi bus stand serving Himachal Road Transport Corporation and private coaches from Chandigarh, Delhi, and Manali.

Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti handles a limited flight schedule, so most travellers arrive either by the toy train from Kalka or by road from Chandigarh, roughly 113 kilometres and 3.5 to 4 hours away depending on traffic through the hill sections. The town's commercial and social core runs along Mall Road and the Ridge, where Christ Church, the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, and Scandal Point sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, while Jakhoo Temple's hilltop and the Viceregal Lodge on neighbouring Summer Hill extend the circuit for visitors with a full day to spend.

October through March delivers the clearest air and, from December, reliable snowfall on higher points like Kufri, while April through June brings warmer days that suit walking the outlying hills before the July-September monsoon makes the steep lanes slick and occasionally triggers landslides on the approach roads.
